Austin
Austin, Texas is one of those wonderful places where boredom does not abound. Most people have heard of many of Austin’s landmarks and sites, such as 6th street, the Capital, or one of the lakes. Although these landmarks are definitely worth visiting (I admit I have yet to visit 6th street, as I’m getting a bit too old)there are amazing local places that only the natives and privileged are aware of– Kirby Lane is just such a place.
Kirby Lane
Kirby Lane has a few different locations, although the original is on….. Kirby Lane (your mind would have been blown if I had said Main Street). This is one of those iconic places my husband has dubbed a “Keep Austin Weird” landmark. As soon as you walk in, you’ll notice that the dress code for the waitress/hosting staff has forbidden them from looking even semi-professional. You will feel at home, even if you are dressed as though you are actually still at home. Kirby uses locally grown, organic and often vegan methods of cooking, but I promise you that you’ll like anything you order. The staple item that you have to order, as a meal on its own or even with breakfast is their queso. You’ll notice that they have a few options, so let me help you in deciding which to order. The house queso. Don’t think about it. Just order it. This weekend, we visited and I tried something new– the California Omelette. This omelette had tomatoes and avocado inside with homemade sour cream and kalamata olives on top. As my sides, I got fresh fruit and a homemade biscuit, which I can assure you would put any southerner to utter shame.
