Whether you live in a downtown area or you travel a lot, you know the challenge the city can bring to having a lifestyle of health. The bars, the greasy spoons, the endless sea of appetizing food with little activity to work all of those extra calories… It can take it’s toll. This is true of a weekend visit that adds a few pounds to the scale (a definite temporary problem), but this is a reality if traveling is a normal occurrence or if, like me, you live downtown.
There are some ways to avoid adding quite as many inches around the waist, while still getting a lot out of the inner city and all it has to offer.
Tips for Downtown Living
- Stay in the downtown area. It’s not only possible to live within a 1 mile radius, it’s easy to do so and still not feel as though you’re being robbed of all the best things. Try walking to work, the gym (if possible), and many eateries.
- Get away from it all, while still in the middle of it all. Many downtown areas have bike and running trails within the city itself (some more so than others). Hit the trails before you hit your day and take a morning run (or walk, if you’re feeling a little lazy).
- Plan your downtown time out. Check online for the city’s events and you might be able to enjoy a festival, concert or a host of other events that can keep you on your feet while still enjoying the most out of your city.
- Schedule your time wisely. Try to schedule the healthier foods on days when you know you’ll spend most of your time sitting and save those higher carb meals for days when you know you’ll be able to spend more time on your feet. You can also save those more laid-back outings for after more strenuous activities, like a heavier gym day, a trip to the zoo, or a downtown festival.
