We’ve all struggled to get that last rep in at the gym, wanting to head home to our post-workout snack. It’s hard to stick with anything long enough to see any actual progress. It’s hard to take risks, knowing you could fail and do so looking foolish. Ideally, we have someone there to spur us on and keep us focused. For those of us who don’t keep friends stashed away in our pockets, we just need a mantra–a word of motivation that we can use to keep ourselves in the game.
When I think of mantras, I think of the yoga enthusiasts with their om’s. I admire their dedication, but I lack their coordination. I’m not suggesting that we all go around humming out om’s while carrying a yoga mat. The original purpose of a mantra was to assist people in concentration while meditating. There is power in having a short motto just for yourself, to remind you to keep trying.
I’m definitely not an expert on mantras, but I would like to share the thought process I went through to think of mine. Hopefully, this will save you from walking around the gym telling yourself “Get ’em, Tiger!”
How to Make a Mantra
- Emotional or spiritual significance. It all comes down to your mantra meaning something to you, individually. As a Christian, I can be most motivated and empowered when I tap into my spirituality.
- Conciseness. If you have to use index cards to memorize it, then you should probably shorten it.
- Be real. Unless you have a degree in marketing, your mantra will not be the next Nike slogan. It isn’t for the masses, it’s for you.
- Helpfulness. If what you’re trying is encouraging and sweet, but it isn’t helping you, then mix it up and try something else.
- Stumped? Look for inspiration from others or even steal one (no one will judge you!)
My mantra
I keep repeating these words, emphasizing a different word until I believe it….
I am highly favored by God.
I am highly favored by God.
I am highly favored by God.
I am highly favored by God.
I am highly favored by God.
I am highly favored by God.
