Ever step into a room, look around and try to hopelessly remember why you were even there? You can’t even remember your purpose, but you know there was a reason you came. After scrambling through your thoughts, you finally remember that you needed to create a to-do list so you wouldn’t forget something. The irony is never lost, but it is always frustrating.
The same is true of your time at the gym, at work or in life. In order to achieve the greatest amount of success, you have to determine why you’re there. As soon as you know what has brought you there, you know what to achieve. It is always more difficult to achieve a goal when you haven’t set a goal. Once you’ve determined your over-arching goal, you can tailor your time accordingly.
Wanting general health? Are you wanting to grow, improve and get stronger? Wanting to make sure you don’t lose the growth you’ve already achieved?
General Health
- Dedicate a few minutes every day check on how you’re doing. Are you beginning to digress? Schedule 15 minutes to working on that area.
- Dedicate 15 minutes to work on maintaining your general health. If it’s the gym, get in a quick 15 minute full body circuit. If it’s emotional health, journal for 15 minutes. And if it’s mental health, read a book for 15 minutes.
Improvement
- Pick specific areas you want to improve. If it’s in all three areas of health (emotional, mental and physical), pick one thing to improve in each. Be as specific as you can be on your goal.
- Dedicate 15 minutes a day to work on each goal, with a set date to assess how you’re doing.
Why maintain?
After you’ve begun to see growth, it’s really easy to become lax. This is especially difficult for me at the first sight of growth. Once you’ve begun to see growth, you’ll quickly take note of certain areas of growth you’ve been working for that aren’t quite as important to you as they were. Focus on the areas you want to keep strong and make a quick plan. You’ll also see other areas of improvement that weren’t that obvious before. You’ll most likely want to change your goals, add to them or completely forget about others. Determine what’s important to you and work towards that.
Why are you even here? Know what has brought you here.
